What is 1045 TGP Steel?
1045 steel—also known as 1045 carbon steel or C1045 steel—is a medium-carbon steel available in hot-rolled or cold-rolled forms.
Hot-rolled steel is processed at temperatures above its recrystallization point, while cold-rolled steel undergoes processing below its recrystallization point. Although hot-rolled steel is more cost-effective, it tends to shrink during cooling, resulting in less precision in the final shape and size.
Cold-rolled 1045 steel’s properties make it ideal for producing industrial parts like axles, bolts, gears, rods, rolls, shafts, and torsion bars.
Why Choose 1045 TGP Steel from Bergsen Metals?
At Bergsen Metals, we stock 1045 carbon steel round bars in TGP condition, providing enhanced dimensional accuracy with tight diameter tolerances—down to +0 / -0.0005″ for certain sizes. The smoother surface finish reduces friction, making assembly easier, which is especially useful in applications involving movement, such as bearings, spindles, and bushings.
Our bars come in 20-24′ random lengths and individually packaged in cardboard tubes for protection. The TGP surface ensures optimal performance in high-precision applications.
Fabrication Information for 1045 Carbon Steel
1045 carbon steel is suitable for various manufacturing processes:
Forging: Forge 1045 steel between 2,200°F and 1,650–1,700°F, depending on part complexity.
Heat Treating: 1045 steel can undergo multiple heat treatments, including:
- Full Annealing: Small parts should be annealed at 1,450–1,600°F, followed by furnace cooling to 1,200°F, then air cooling.
- Normalizing: Normalize between 1,650–1,700°F, depending on when it’s done during heat treatment, followed by still air cooling.
- Hardening: Harden at 1,475–1,550°F with oil or water quenching.
- Tempering: After hardening and quenching, temper at 750–1,260°F.
Machining: 1045 steel offers good machinability when heat treated correctly.
Welding: With the right procedure, 1045 steel can be welded effectively. However, hardened material is not recommended for welding.
