1215 Carbon Steel
1215 steel is part of the free-machining carbon steel family, much like 12L14, but without the addition of lead. Instead, it contains higher levels of sulfur and phosphorus, which significantly enhance its machinability compared to standard carbon steel grades.
What Is It Made Of?
1215 steel’s composition includes:
- Carbon (C): Up to 0.09%
Carbon is the primary hardening element in steel, providing strength and hardness. - Manganese (Mn): 0.60% – 1.00%
Manganese contributes to both the strength and hardness of the steel, while also improving machinability. - Phosphorus (P): 0.04% – 0.09%
Phosphorus increases strength and hardness. However, excessive amounts can make the steel brittle. In 1215 steel, phosphorus is controlled to enhance machinability without compromising integrity. - Sulfur (S): 0.26% – 0.35%
Sulfur is added to further improve machinability, although it may reduce toughness. - Iron (Fe): The remainder of the composition is primarily iron, forming the balance of the material.
How Is 1215 Steel Used?
Due to its composition, 1215 steel is particularly well-suited for manufacturing parts that require extensive machining, where precision and consistent quality are more important than raw strength or toughness. Common applications include screws, bolts, fasteners, gears, and hydraulic components. Furthermore, the cost-effectiveness of this steel grade makes it an excellent choice for automotive parts and hardware components such as pins, hinges, and brackets.
